The purpose of this paper is to t삶‘e a look at the gisaeng of the fst half of the 20th century and to thoroughly discuss the careers of those gisaeng who were active as singers of popular songs, as well as the songs that they sung, uncovering what sort of contribution they made ín the history of songs. Gisaeng played an important role as síngers of conventional songs, and the veη first phonograpruc recording on record was made by a gisaeng. Gisaeng also made major contributions as singers of pop띠arsongs ín the nùd 1930s. Led by 、Vang Subok, the gisaeng singers of popular songs in the 1930s were very popular ín their day‘ During the process of exanùning the records recorded by these gisaeng, it was discovered that, contrary to previous research, gisaeng singers of popular songs were not merely acve as singers of simple new folk songs (Sinmiiη!yo). Seonu llseon and Yi Hwaja were clearly skilled in the area of new folk songs, so it is not unreasonable to label them new folk song singers, but Wang Subok, Kim Bokhui, and Kim Insuk recorded far more YuJuengga than new folk songs. Popular song singers of gisaeη g ongm were impαtant because, as hey were well-versed in tradition vocalization and singing hniques, they were able to play the role of a bridge between tradition and the newly emerging music of the time. In short, giseng singers of the first half of the 20th century were not only singers of conventional and popular songs, but they helped connect traditìonal and new forrns of music‘ It is clear that an objective perceptíon 때d evaluation of the activities of gisaeng singers is necessary.
