11ris study took note of ’mythological motifs’ found in H wang Sun -won’s post-war long novels. It exarruned the post-war images of human beings created by the writer, focused on ’mythological characters’ ap야않ing in Cain ζ Descendents (953), Hncm Grafts 0955 (AngeJ)) and Trees S때1d α1 The Slope (960) in the order of publication. Hwang Sun-won s post-war long novels include mythological motifs from the Genesis in Christianity. In the Christian myth of creation, ’Cain’ has the image of a sinner as the frrst son of man and the first murderer but ’Abel’ means the first ’victim and marηr because of his faith in God. In Cain s Descendents, Hwang Sun-won creates the personality of a figure, quoting the motif of Cain . In the story, ’Cain’ destroys people’ s trust and leads the village community into confusion. Contrary to Cain’s personality, Hwang Sun-won fails to create Abel s personality. Abel appears to be immature in consciousness as shown by his attachment to motherly love. On1y in long novels after αun s Descendents, Hwang Sun-won describes ’Abel as a mature person. In Hwnan Grafting, ’Abel’ has the image of a shepherd who is looking for a lost sheep and appears as a man of healing. In the storγ, Hwang Sun-won brings into relief wounded soldiers(war victimsl who save orphans’ as well as themselves. In Trees Sαmd α1 The Slope, student soldiers I represent the image of I Abel’. They redeem the violent war (Cain) by shedding the blood of ransom rather than retaliating. In the work, redeeming Abels remind us of Sisyphus’ in Albert Camus work. In Trees Snd α1 The Slope, Abels, who do not yield to any difficulties, redeem themselves and, furthermore, pursue the salvation of others, are ’contemporary heroes created by Hwang Sun-won. Hwang Sun-won created ’r려eeming and ransoming Abel who is posìtive and active, so is able to rebuild the post-war society.
