Jo Sang-hun in Sarndae is a pathfinder of civilizing Korea, who is set for an intelligentsia of the day, even studies in Arnerica. However, he is desbed as an negative character. It is the axis of the narratives of Sarrae that Samdae describes such a man denies the world which endows his lives by some way, and then is deniecl by that. The method that seeks for the perVersive course of the intelligentsia, through the cause result relation of a confliction betw son and father, should be a desirable method that can read a coJonial society observed in Samdae. As the aggravaκ Iation with his father, Jo Eui-kw, predicts such a tng, Jo Sang-hun’s behavior pattn means a breaking-off of the custom Jo Eui-kwan dwells‘ It aJso mns that it pulls down a world of ’a viπu image 10 which Jo Eui-kwan clings. Even so, so far from supporting from the intelligentsia, the fact that Yeom Sang-seob describes him as a person embarrassed on his son is due to his acute recogrrition of his generation and preceding generation.
