귀환서사에 나타난 균열과 직시되는 진실

Conflict and Facing Up to It s Truth in the Return Narrative - Focusing on Fujiwara Tei’s novel “The Streaming Star is Living” -

일본의 패전으로 일제가 구축한 식민지 혹은 준식민지에 살던 일본인들은 귀환, 즉 인양(引き揚げ)을 시도한다. 그 과정에서의 다기한 경험들이 귀국 후 여러 가지 형태의 글로 발표된다. 이들 귀환자들은 어떤 형태로건 제국일본의 식민지 통치에 가담한 사람들이고, 개인차는 있겠지만 지배자의 지위에 있었던 사람들이다. 그랬기 때문에 패전으로 인해 졸지에 지배자의 자리를 내놓아야 했고, 자리의 역전은 그들을 예상치도 못한 새로운 경험의 장(場)으로 내몰았다. 패배자가 되어 귀환 과정에서 경험해야 했던 상실감, 불안, 두려움, 원망, 그리고 귀국 후 같은 민족인 본토인에게서 받아야 했던 차별의 기억들이 하나하나 글로 발표되었던 것이다. 이 논문은 그런 내용을 담고 있는 귀환서사 중 하나인 후지와라 테이의 소설『흐르는 별은 살아있다』를 분석하였다. 가장인 남성이 부재한 상황에서 ‘어미로서의 책임’과 가정을 지켜내야 할 가장으로서의 책무를 다하기 위해, 만주에서 본국으로 귀환하는 과정에서 보여준 후지와라 테이의 고군분투가 이 소설에는 잘 그려져 있다. 특히 이 소설에는 귀환 과정에서 만난 일본인, 귀국을 위해 반드시 거쳐야 하는 한반도에 진주한 소련군 미군과, 정치적 예속 관계에서 벗어나 지위가 변한 조선인들에 대한 진술이 진솔하게 그려져 있다. 본 논문은 후지와라 테이가 귀환과정에서 만난 이런 ‘사람들’의 반응을 중심으로 그것이 갖는 의미를 살펴보았다.

The Japanese occupants of the colonies and quasi-colonies Japan had constructed attempted to return(引き揚げ) to their homeland after Japan’s defeat in the Second World War. Many experiences which occurred in the course of this return journey have been documented through various writings. The returnees, who had previously been involved in various capacities in reinforcing the Japanese Empire’s colonial controls, found their positions inverted after Japan’s defeat: from positions as rulers, they were brought down to face unexpected hardships. Defeated, the feelings of desperation, anxiety, resentment and fear they experienced in the course of their return journeys, as well as the memory of the discrimination they faced from fellow countrymen on their return, are documented in various individual accounts. One such homecoming story, found in Fujiwara Tei’s(ふじわらてい) novel “The Streaming Star is Living”, is the subject of this thesis. The novel gives a vivid description of the struggles of Fujiwara Tei, as the head of her family and without a husband, in trying to keep her family together while returning home from Manju. Particularly, this novel gives clear accounts of Japanese people and the US and Soviet armies then in control of the Korean Peninsula, as well as Korean people in the process regaining self-respect and sovereignty after years of colonial domination, that she encountered on her return journey. This thesis examines these people’s responses and the meaning of such responses which she met on her return to Japan.
