<자기록>과 열녀전에 나타난 가족 행동 묘사와 그 의미

The Description of Familiy Members’ Behaviors and its Meaning shown in <Jagirok> and Yeolyeojeon

자기록>은 풍양조씨(豊穰趙氏: 1772~1815)가 남편이 병으로 세상을 떠난 이후 자신의 삶을 돌아보며 기록한 일종의 자서전이다. <자기록>은 발견된 이후 줄곧 열녀전과 비교되어 왔다. 열녀전들이 양반 남성 지식인의 열녀관에 입각한 서술인 반면 <자기록>은 여성 스스로가 종사가 예상되는 상황을 견뎌낸 일을 기록한 것이기 때문이다. 본고는 이처럼 대척점에 놓이는 두 작품(군)에서 특히 열녀를 둘러싼 가족들의 행동 묘사에 주목하여 비교하였다. <자기록>의 경우 남편을 잃은 딸 혹은 조카, 며느리, 동생인 여인을 바라보는 가족들의 입장과 태도는 매우 다양하게 묘사되어 있는데, 열녀교육에 투철했던 당대의 여인들처럼 조씨가 종사를 결심하려 할 때 가족들은 끊임없이 그녀의 결심을 좌절시키기 위해 노력했다. 그런데 주목할 점은 <자기록>과 항상 비교되곤 했던 열녀전들에도 이런 장면들이 매우 빈번히 묘사되고 있다는 점이다. 열의 획득을 위해 죽음을 불사해야 하는 극단적인 상황이 닥칠 경우에는 교육받은 관념과 이데올로기를 무용지물로 만드는 삶(혈연)에 대한 애착이 있었다. 그것이 바로 인간 삶의 보편성이라는 것일 것이다. 여성이 자신의 입장에서 기술한 자서전이든, 남성이 열관념을 이상화하여 기술한 열녀전이든 이러한 애착 혹은 삶의 보편성이라 할 저항의 모습을 묘사하는 데 있어서 공통된 모습을 보였다. 즉 열녀전은 의도하지 않았겠지만 극단적 열관념에 대한 저항의 생생한 모습을 묘사하고야 만 것이다.

Jagirok> is a kind of autobiography which Mrs. Pungyang Cho(1772~1815) recorded looking back upon her life after her husband had passed away because of illness. <Jagirok> has been compared with Yeolyeojeon since it was found. Yeolyeojeon is a narrative on the basis of a view of Yeolyeo (a virtuous woman) by the male gentry, while <Jagirok> is a journal that a woman recorded coping with the expected situation of following her husband to the grave by herself. This research shows the comparison between the descriptions of family members’ behaviors connected with, especially, Yeolyeo in just the opposite two writings As for <Jagirok>, there are a wide variety of family members’ positions and attitudes with which they were watching a widow as a daughter, a niece, a daughter-in-law and a sister after her husband’s death, and also they constantly tried to dissuade Mrs. Cho from making her decision of following her husband to the grave as most women actively receiving Yeolyeo education at that time. However, it is remarkable that these kinds of scenes were depicted very frequently in Yeolyeojeons, always compared with <Jagirok> as well. Facing against the catastrophic situation that a widow should risk her life to get a virtue of Yeol, she felt a strong attachment for life(blood ties) which made her educated moral sense and ideology of no use. This is just the human being‘s universal way of life. Whether it is an autobiography a woman recorded on her part or Yeolyeojeon a man wrote idealizing a moral sense of Yeol, both of them have the similarity of representing the images of resistance like attachment for life or a universal way of life. In other words, it has been revealed that there are vivid depictions of resistance in Yeolyeojeon, though unwilling for, as <Jagirok> was intended for.
