What Can Christianity Learn from Korean Confucian Funerary Rituals?

한국은 다종교 문화권으로서 죽음으로 인한 트라우마에서 벗어나 영생에 대한 희망으로 삶을 꽃피울 수 있도록 기독교의 부활 믿음 말고도 다양한 믿음을 허용하고 있다. 세계적인 자본주의와 도시문명이 너무 자주 죽음을 상품화하고 의료화하며 터부시하게 만드는 반면 한국의 유교 전통에서는 상제의식(상례문화)을 잘 보존해오고 있다. 이 유산은 현대 자본주의 사회를 지탱해준 물질중심의 사고로 인하여 빈약해지거나 잃어버리게 된 상례문화를 복구하는데 도움이 될 수 있으며, 세계의 시민들이 자기의 마인드와 마음 안에 깊숙이 자리 잡고 있는 영생에 대한 염원, 즉 자기 실현을 재발견하는 데 도움이 될 수 있다.

As part of a multi-religious context, in addition to the Christian faith in resurrection, Korea allows her people to resort to various beliefs to overcome the trauma caused by the loss of loved ones, thereby letting it blossom into the hope of some form of eternal life. While the worldwide spread of capitalism and the resulting urbanization have too often led to the commercialization, the medicalization and ultimately the transformation of death into a taboo, Korean Confucian tradition still retains much of her funeral culture. This inheritance may help capitalist societies to rehabilitate impoverished or lost funeral rituals, and thus allow the rediscovery of a longing for immortality, i.e. self-realization, that dwells deep in the hearts and minds of all its members.
