Inscribed Roof Tiles of the Yi Dynasty Discovered in Kyongju

There has been a general tendency to regard roof tiles d.iscovered in Kyongju as th∞e of 5illas. Some of the roof tiles like ones on which Chinese characters of Dong Yo(東) were inscribed havebeen used as a material evidence to support the prce of roof tile kilns operated by Uñed Silla central govemment. However, this Dong Yo(東憲mì양lt have be produced during the Yi nasty when we are considering r∞f tile production activities appeared in the official rustorical record of Yi masty (朝蘇王朝寶錄) and le roof tile themselves in terms of day and temper, there ís a ru possíbiliη that these Dong Yo must have been produced ding the Yi nas. on the othernd, WI∞ Gwan (右) r∞f tiles mìlt have been produced both during the Unified Silla Dynas and the Yi Dynasty respectively. According to Donggyung Jabgi(東京雜記), 1 believe that Joua 0이左道) r∞f tiles, mìght ind.icate one of six names of admìnistrative ctors(i.e., in Kyongju during the beginning of the Yi asty. 50, 1 argued that archaeologists need to pay attention to the fact that all roof tiles d.iscovered in K yonumìlt not those of Sillas.
