Factors Associated with Suicidal Ideation among College Students: Mediating Effects of Self-Identity and Depression

본 연구는 대학생을 둘러싼 환경체계 요인들이 그들의 자살생각에 어떤 영향을 미치는지를 분석하고, 이 과정에서 자아정체감과 우울을 매개로하는 경로모형을 검증하는 것이 목적이다. 구체적으로, 대학생들의 개인적 특성, 가족적 특성, 학교 특성, 사회문화적 특성이 그들의 자살생각에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지를 파악하고, 이들 특성이 자아정체감과 우울의 경로를 통해 자살생각에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지를 파악하였다. 본 연구의 대상은 전라북도 소재 5개 대학교의 대학생들을 비확률 표본추출 방법 중 편의표집(이용가능 표집) 방법으로 선정하였다. 자료는 구조화된 설문지를 자기기입식 방법으로 수집하였다. 배부된 설문지는 총 1,500부이고, 회부된 설문지 중 응답이 충실한 1,329부가 본 연구의 분석 자료로 사용되었다. 경로 분석 결과, 독립변수 중 가족 자살자 수, 친구 자살자 수, 상담기관방문은 자살생각에 직접적 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났으며, 스트레스, 아동학대경험, 학업성적, 친구지지는 자아정체감과 우울을 매개로 자살생각에 간접적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 밝혀졌다. 또한, 상담필요, 의사소통, 전문가지지, 외모태도는 자살생각에 직접적인 영향 및 자아정체감과 우울을 통해 자살생각에 간접적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 확인되었다. 그러나 자살보도에 대한 대중매체태도는 자살생각에 영향을 미치지 않는 것으로 나타났다. 연구결과를 바탕으로 대학생의 자살을 예방 및 개입을 위한 실천적 함의를 제시하였다.

The purpose of the study was to examine factors associated with college students’ suicidal ideation by examining how it was affected by individual, family, school, social and cultural factors and mediating factors(e.g. self-identity and depression). Data were gathered from college students of five universities in Jeonbuk area. Using a structured self-administered questionnaire, a total of 1,500 questionnaires were distributed, and 1,329 of them were analyzed in this study. The path analysis revealed that the number of family members and friends who committed suicide and experience of visiting counseling center had a direct effect on suicidal ideation, and stress, experience of abuse during childhood, grade, and friend support had an indirect effect on suicidal ideation through self-identity and depression. In addition, counseling needs, communication skills between parents and children, expert support, and attitudes regarding one’s appearance had both direct and indirect effects on suicidal ideation via self-identity and depression. However, attitudes regarding mass media suicide reports were not significantly associated with suicidal ideation. Based on the study findings, implications for practice to prevent and reduce suicidal ideation of college students and for future studies were discussed.
