The Effects of Water Exercise on Pain and Depression of Female Elderly Degenerative Arthritis

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of 8weeks’ water exercise on female elderly degenerative arthritis’s pain and depression. The subjects of this study were 40 female degenerative arthritis whose age are over 60. All subjects participated in water exercise program 2times a week, and for 60 minutes each. The water exercise program consists of walking, jogging and jumping in shallow and deep water. Before and after 8 weeks’ water exercise program, pain(Visual Analogue Scale) and depression(Geriatric Depression Scale) were measured. The statistical methods employed in this study were Friedman’s ANOVA by ranks. The results of this study were as follows. 1. Before and after 8 weeks’ water exercise program, there is significant differences in pain. (p<.01) 2. Between pre test of first water exercise program and pre test of last water exercise program, there is significant differences in pain. (p<.05) 3. Between post test of first water exercise program and post test of last water exercise program, there is no significant differences in pain. 4. Before and after 8 weeks’ water exercise program, there is no significant differences in depression. In conclusion, the following points were drawn. Because water exercise is low or no impact exercise, water exercise reduce the pain of articulation loaded by exercise on the ground. Therefore water exercise can be regarded as an efficient and safe exercise for the elderly and degenerative arthritis.
