The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of jazz dance on the physical self-efficacy of adult women living in downtown Seoul (average age of 27) who have or have not participated in a jazz dance program. The 158 participants in the jazz dance program and 54 non-participants responded to the Korean version of the Physical Self-Efficacy Scale (PSE) (Hong, 1996). The questionnaire for this study consists of PSE that also includes the Perceived Physical Ability and Physical Self-Presentation Confidence Factor. A one-way ANOVA was used to analyze the different levels of physical self-efficacy according to their experience with jazz dance and the length of this experience. The results showed that the group who had participated in the jazz dance program had higher scores of physical self-efficacy. especially for those who had participated in the jazz dance program for more than four years. This same pattern was observed on the Perceived Physical Ability factor. However, while a significant difference was found between the group who had participated less than one year and those who had participated for over four years on the Physical Self-Presentation Confidence Factor, no significant difference between the non-participation group and the over four year group was found. These findings suggest that adult women who participate in jazz dance programs are likely to improve their physical self-efficacy and the longer they participate the greater this effect will be.
