In this present study, we investigated the anticancer activities of non-fermented teas (Woojeon, Sejak, Jungjak and Daejak) in HCT116 human colon cancer cells. The antioxidant activities of Woojeon, Sejak, Jungjak and Daejak at 0.1 mg/mL in terms of their DPPH free radical scavenging activities were found to be 91.2, 91.6, 92.7 and 94.4%, respectively. The treatment of HCT116 human colon cancer cells with 0.6 mg/mL of Woojeon, Sejak, Jungjak and Daejak resulted in the characteristic sequence of apoptosis and morphological changes. The cell viability was also decreased upon the addition of Woojeon, Sejak, Jungjak and Daejak, and the main catechins, (-)-epicatechingallate, (-)-epigallocatechingallate and (-)-epigallocatechin, to HCT116 human colon cancer cells. Moreover, the Bax and Bcl-2 expression levels were increased, resulting in the activation of caspase-9, caspase-3 and cleaved poly-ADP-ribose polymerase; these observations are hallmarks of apoptotic events.
