중학교 1학년 영어교과서의 문화내용분석

An Analysis of the Cultural Contents in Korean Middle School English Textbooks

본 논문은 외국어교육에 있어서 문화교육과 관련하여 제7차 교육과정의 중학교 1학년 영어교과서 총 15종을 대상으로 소재별, 주제별, 국가별로 문화내용을 분석하고 문화교육을 위한 몇 가지 효과적인 제안점을 제언하고자 하는 것이다. 첫째, 소재별 분석에 있어서는 제7차 교육과정에서 제시하는 소재분석표에 근거하여 열일곱 가지의 소재로 나누어 분석하였으며 소재4에 해당하는 사회생활과 인간관계를 이해하는데 도움이 되는 소재의 비중이 가장 높게 나타났다. 둘째, 주제별 분석에서는 문화유형에 따라 물질문화, 행동문화, 정신문화로 나누어 분석하였는데 분석결과 행동문화, 정신문화, 물질문화 순으로 나타났다. 셋째, 국가배경별 분석에서는 보편적인 문화배경, 한국적인 배경, 영미적인 배경, 기타배경으로 나누어 분석하였다. 그 결과 보편적인 배경이 27.9%로 가장 높은 비중을 차지하였고 영미적인 배경이 25.4%, 한국적인 배경이 20.9%, 기타배경이 11%를 차지하였다.

The purpose of this research is to analyze the cultural contents in middle school English textbooks and to find out some effective suggestions of teaching culture from these texts. To perform this research, the culture contents in fifteen English textbooks is paradigmatically analyzed according to three criteria such as materials, themes and cultural background. The results of this study can be summed as follows. First, the results of subject analysis of the material are that many textbooks present cultural material conforming to the 7th curriculum. For example, on the basis of a material analysis table, the fourth materials which are helpful in understanding social lives and personal relationships. However, there is a need to deal with seventeen materials evenly because one more than materials were excluded in ten kinds of textbooks. Second, the thematic analysis shows that the percentage of behavioral cultural content is relatively higher than that of mental culture. The behavioral cultural content was more overwhelming than other themes. Third, the analysis of national background shows that universal cultural background makes up 27.9% and it is the highest of all backgrounds. The cultures of English speaking countries make up 25.4% and Korean background makes up 20.9%. And non-English speaking countries make up only 11%. In foreign language education, the best effectiveness of the culture education will be achieved when the cultural contents are introduced variously and well-balanced materials in all kinds of textbooks are appropriately used by teachers in the real education field.
