서양예술사조의 등장에 관한 제도론적, 사회운동관점에서의 고찰 - 미국 추상표현주의 사례를 중심으로 -

The Emergence of an Art Form: The Case of American Abstract Expressionism

문화예술영역에서의 새로운 카테고리(category) 혹은 사조의 등장에 대한 연구는 다양한 제도가 갖는 역할의 중요성을 강조해 왔다. 하지만 이런 기존연구에서 문화예술영역 에서의 새로운 사조의 등장에서 창조의 주체인 예술가들 간, 혹은 예술가들과 그들의 주변인들 - 특히, 작품을 평가하는 오디언스 - 간의 사회적 교류에 대한 연구는 극히 드물 다. 하지만 다른 영역에서의 창조 프로세스와 마찬가지로 문화예술영역에서 또한 새로운 카테고리 혹은 사조의 등장이 창조의 주체들을 포함한 다양한 이해관계자들의 협상과 논쟁의 과정을 통해 등장해 왔다. 따라서 이러한 논의의 부재는 문화예술영역에서의 새로운 카테고리 혹은 사조의 등장에 대해 관심이 있는 연구자들에게는 안타까운 일이다. 본 논문은 프로세스적, 사회운동적 접근법을 사용하여 이러한 이론적 시각으로 회화예술 영역에서의 새로운 사조의 등장을 미국 표현추상주의 (American Abstract Expressionism) 사례를 통해 설명하고자 한다. 특히, 본 논문에서는 미국 표현추상주의 직전인 1910년 -1920년의 미국회화분야의 역사적, 사회적 상황을 살펴봄으로서, 미국 표현추상주의의 등장에 대한 시대적 배경에 대한 이해를 바탕으로 하여, 1930년-1940년대 표현추상주의 운동에 참여한 예술가들의 집단적 아이덴티티가 형성된 사회적, 역사적 과정에 대한 논의를 전개한다. 본 논문은 새로운 문화예술사조의 등장에 대한 기존의 미학적 시각과는 다른 새로운 관점을 제시한다는데 그 의의가 있다.

Although a growing body work has examined the creation and success of a cultural or art form highlighting various roles played by supporting institutions surrounding a particular cultural or artistic form, much less attention has been directed to tensions underlying the social interactions amongst artists as well as between artists and their audiences, and to how some artists and their work rise to prominence in this process of negotiation and contestation. Applying both the process approach and the social-movement approach to the study of the emergence of a new visual art form or category known as Abstract Expressionism (AE henceforth), this paper focuses on such tensions and contestation and offers an analytical narrative of the emergent processes of the creation of a visual art category. The study of AE provides a compelling case to the researchers who view the formation and rise of a new art form as a socially constructed process, rather than as an inevitable movement toward aesthetic progress. Emphasis is placed on the institutional and socio-historical conditions of visual arts in America preceding the emergence of AE (the 1910s~the 1920s) and the historical and social contexts that underpinned the construction of a collective identity among the movement participants during the 1930s~the 1940s. This article contributes to the literature on cultural innovation by advancing a theoretically and historically informed account of the emergence of a new visual art form commonly recognized as AE, which, since its creation, has had far-reaching impact on the visual art world.
