위작 예술품은 해로운가?

Are Fakes in Art Harmful?

일반적으로 예술가들이나 법률가들은 예술품의 위작품 제작에 관해 부정적인 태도를 취하고 있다. 도덕적으로 옳지 못한 행위라는 말이다. 그러나 경제학적인 관점에서는 반드시 그런 견해가 설득력이 있는지 의문의 여지가 많다. 물론 원작 예술품에 대한 복사 또는 위작 제조 행위가 전혀 경제적인 문제가 없다는 말은 아니다. 이 논문의 목적은 원작 예술품의 복사본 또는 위작품 제작이 사회적으로 반드시 해로운 것만은 아니라는 것을 보이고자 하는 것이다.

Fakes in art are, in general, considered to be forgeries or counterfeit and are, therefore, treated as products of fraud that must be prohibited. This notion implies that the uniqueness of an original work must be protected against imitation or copies. Copyright law and artists themselves oppose copies or any kind of imitation of original artworks. Economists, however, seem to hold the view that copies are not necessarily bad. They may, in fact, enhance social welfare. This paper aims to show that fakes in art are not necessarily harmful to society and may ultimately enhance social welfare.
