이병주 문학에 나타난 교양주의적 세계시민주의

Liberal cosmopolitanism in Lee Byung Joo literature

본 연구는 냉전시대 세계시민주의의 한 양상으로서 이병주 문학을 조명한다. 이병주는 이데올로기의 한계를 인식하고 이데올로기에서 벗어난 인간의 삶을 지향한다. 그러한 이병주의 지향은 보편적인 인류애에 기반한 교양주의적 세계시민주의로 구체화된다. 이병주의 세계 기행문 󰡔바람소리, 발소리, 목소리󰡕, 󰡔잃어버린 시간을 위한 문학적 기행󰡕과 장편 소설 󰡔미완의 극󰡕, 󰡔허드슨강이 말하는 강변 이야기󰡕에는 세계를 지향했던 교양주의자 이병주의 시선이 형상화되어 있다. 그의 세계시민주의는 교양주의자로서 당연한 결과물이었으나 이데올로기 문제로 극심한 피로 상태에 놓여 있던 당시 한국 사회에서 그러한 주장을 내세운 작가는 별로 없었다. 그는 자신이 바라보았던 세계가 서구에 국한된 것이었 다는 사실을 자각하고 반성한다. 또한 휴머니즘을 기반으로 세계가 더이상 분쟁하지 않는 공동체가 되기를 바랐으며, 이에 제기될 수 있는 과거의 역사로 인해 발생한 복수의 문제와 인종주의 문제에 대해서도 끊임없이 대안을 마련하고자 하는 모습을 보인다. 그의 고민과 해결, 그에 따른 구체적 구상은 󰡔바람소리, 발소리, 목소리󰡕, 󰡔잃어버린 시간을 위한 문학적 기행󰡕, 󰡔미완의 극󰡕, 󰡔허드슨강이 말하는 강변 이야기󰡕로 표상된 다.

This study highlights Lee Byung-joo s literature as a feature of cosmopolitanism during the Cold War era. Lee Byung-joo realizes the limits of ideology and aims to live a life away from ideology. The orientation of Lee Byung-joo becomes concrete as a liberal cosmopolitanism based on universal brotherhood. Lee Byung-joo s Journey to the World Wind, Walking, Voice and literary journeys for lost time and the unfinished play, and the river of the Hudson River are based on the views of the state s culture. His cosmopolitanism was a natural result of the liberal arts, but few writers made such assertions in Korean society at the time when he was in a state of extreme fatigue over ideological issues. He realizes and reflects on the fact that the world he was looking at was limited to the West. It also wanted the world to be a conflict-free community based on humanism, and addresses the plural issues created by the history of the past so that they could be raised. His agony and solution, along with his concrete ideas, are expressed in the words of Wind, Walking, Voice and literary journeys for lost time and the unfinished play, and the river of the Hudson River.
