In order to analyze the effects of goal orientation on the self-esteem of adolescents who participated in regular taekwondo classes, the research subjects were designated to be 383 middle and high schoolaged students that attended regular taekwondo classes at an alternative school located in Chungcheongbuk- do, wherein taekwondo is part of the curriculum. The gauge used in this study was the Achievement Goal Orientation gauge developed by Jeong-hee Kim et al.(2000), for self-esteem the CSEI criterion from Coopersmith(1967), and background statistics processing, the spss 21.0 version of the statistical package program was used to analyze the effects between variables through correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis. Study results showed that performance approach and learning goals had a significant effect on self-esteem in the family and in society(p<.05). Performance avoidance, a subdivision of Achievement Goal Orientation, showed to have a significant effect on self-esteem in school(p<.05). Performance approach, performance avoidance, and learning goals which are all subdivisions of Achievement Goal Orientation had a significant effect on general self-esteem(p<.05). With such study results, the Achievement Goal Orientation in taekwondo class can be considered an important factor that affects self-esteem.
