COLT 수업관찰 분석법을 통한 초등영어 드라마 수업의 의사소통활동 분석

An analysis of students communicative activities in primary English drama class using COLT

본 연구의 목적은 COLT(Communicative Orientation of Language Teaching) 수업관찰 분석법을 통해 초등학생 대상 드라마를 활용한 영어수업의 의사소통활동 양상을 분석하는 것이다. 연구를 위해 한국교육방송의 영어교육 프로그램(EBSe)에서 드라마를 활용한 초등교사의 우수 영어수업을 선택하여 COLT 수업관찰 분석법으로 분석하였다. 의사소통활동 분석 범주에 따라 의사소통의 내용, 학생들의 양상 등을 나타내는 1부와 발화의 지속성, 학생 발화의 형태 제한 등을 나타내는 2부로 나누 어 의사소통활동을 살펴보았다. 연구 결과, 초등학교 5학년생들은 드라마를 활용한 영어수업을 통하여 한 단어, 또는 짧은 문장이지만 의미 있는 맥락 속에서 영어로 자유롭게 발화하며 교사, 또래 학생들과 적극적이고 창의적으로 실제 의사소통을 경험했다. 의사소통을 할 때 언어만큼 중요한 비언어적 기술들(얼굴 표정, 몸짓 등)도 자연스럽게 연습할 기회를 가졌다. 또한, 듣기, 읽기와 같은 풍부한 언어 입력을 제공 받았고, 말하기와 같은 영어 사용의 기회도 많이 가질 수 있었다. 따라서 드라마를 활용한 영어수업은 초등학생들의 의사소통능력을 향상시키는데 긍정적인 영향을 끼칠 수 있음을 확인했다.

The objective of this study is to analyze the modalities of communicative activities in English class using drama for primary school students by COLT(Communicative Orientation of Language Teaching). A primary school teacher s English class using drama from the Educational Broadcasting System English(EBSe) was selected and analyzed via the COLT observation scheme. This study examined the content of communication, modalities of students, etc. (Part 1), and the sustained speech, form restriction, etc. (Part 2) of the COLT observation scheme by counting each drama activity according to the COLT communicative categories. The result of this study showed that the 5th grade students in primary school communicated in English in active and creative ways freely in authentic and meaningful context with the teacher and the peers even though they only used single word, phrases, or short sentences of English. They also had chances to practice non-verbal language such as facial expressions and gestures that were as important as verbal language to communicate effectively and naturally. The students were offered rich input of English and many opportunities to use English in the drama class. The study showed that English class using drama can have a positive impact on primary school students to improve their English communicative skills.
