본 논문은 디모데전서 2:8의 분사구 evpai,rontaj o`siouj cei/raj를 예배의 기도 문맥이 아닌 성도들이 타인을 돕는 봉사의 문맥에서 이해해야함을 제안한 다. 이 논의를 위해 우선 언어적 차원에서 디모데전서 2:8의 구문과 개별 어휘 들을 분석했다. 구문론적으로 필자들은 분사 evpai,rontaj가 명사 tou.j a;ndraj 와 함께 부정사 proseu,cesqai의 목적구로 사용되었음을 드러냈다(이전에는 evpai,rontaj가 tou.j a;ndraj와 및 proseu,cesqai와 관련하여 부사절로 번역됨). 한편, 형용사 o`si,ouj와 명사 cei/raj는 문자적으로“손을 드는”(기도의 모양)것을 말하지 않고 비유적 의미로 분사 evpai,rontaj와 함께“타인을 돕는”의 의미로 이해되어야 한다고 제안했다. 문맥적으로는 디모데전서 2:8이 포함된 2장의 전체(2:3)와 좀 넓은 문맥인 1-3장의 내용이 예배 정황이 아닌 이 땅에서의 교회 존속을 위한 내용이라는 관점에서 분석하여 디모데전서 2:8이 봉사의 맥락에서 이해되어야 한다고 제안했다. 이러한 분석을 근거로 하여 필자들은 디모데전서 2:8의 새로운 번역을“그러므로 나는 각처에서 남자들이 화냄과 논쟁 없이 거룩한 손을 들도록[즉, 타인을 돕도록] 기도하길 원한다.”로 제안한 다.

This article suggests to a new translation of the participle phrase evpai,rontaj o`si,ouj cei/raj in 1 Timothy 2:8, placing it not within a prayer context of worship but within Christians’ service context for others. For this suggestion authors firstly analyse words of 1 Timothy 2:8 in both syntactical level and lexical level. Syntactically, authors demonstrate that the participle evpai,rontaj consists of an accusative-participle construction of the infinitive proseu,cesqai with the noun tou.j a;ndraj that accords in gender, number and case(formerly, this participle has been adverbially interpreted with tou.j a;ndraj that functions as the accusative sense-subject of proseu,cesqai). Lexically, authors suggest a new understanding of the nominal phrase o`si,ouj cei/raj with evpai,rontaj, i.e. figuratively “helping others,” not literally “lifting up hands”(i.e. an attitude of prayer). On the other hand, analysing chapter 2(esp. 2:3) of 1 Timothy and its broader context(chaps. 1-3) from the viewpoint that they do not mention on a worship context but the issue of sustenance of church in this world, authors suggest that 1 Timothy 2:8 should be understood in the context of Christian service for others. Based on the above-mentioned analysis, authors suggest a new translation of 1 Timothy 2:8 as follows(adapting NIV): “Therefore, I want to pray that the men lift up holy hands[i.e. help others] without anger or disputing everywhere.”
