쟈크 엘룰과 프란시스 쉐퍼를 통해 본그리스도인의 사회, 윤리적 과제 연구

A Study on Social and Ethical Responsibility of Christians: Focusing on Jacques Ellul and Francis A. Schaeffer

현대 문명을 비판하고 진실한 그리스도인으로서 삶을 살아가려 했던 복음주의의 대표적인 지성인 쟈크 엘룰(Jacques Ellul, 1912-1994년)과 프란시스 쉐퍼(Francis A. Schaeffer, 1912-1984년)는 기독교 신앙이 현대 사회 속에 서도 여전히 의미가 있으며, 현대 사회의 잘못된 병폐들을 치유할 것이라고 믿었다. 그들은 현대 사회에서 일어나는 많은 현상들을 기독교 신앙을 가지고 비판한 당 시대의 최고 지성인들이며 행동하는 실천가들이었다. 이들은 세상을 바라보는 선지자적 통찰력과 신앙의 이름으로 세상에 복음을 선포했고 그리스도인이 세상을 바라보아야 할 안목과 통찰력을 제공해 주었다. 그들은 모두 계시의 말씀인 성경을 절대적 가치로 보았고 기술 사회의 현실 속에서 그리스도인의 사회, 윤리적 책임을 제시하였다. 엘룰과 쉐퍼는 모두 삶과 행동으로 그리스도인의 영향력을 드러냈으며 세상이라는 무대에서 빛과 소금으로의 역량을 강조하였다. 그들이 후대 복음주의 자들에게 제시한 학문의 깊이, 열정적인 신앙, 세속 세계에 던진 영향력과 도전은 21세기 그리스도인들이 나아가야할 지표를 설정해 주기에 충분할 것이다. 본 연구에서는 엘룰과 쉐퍼 두 인물의 신학과 기독교 사회에 대한 인식을 비교하면서 그리스도인의 세상을 바라보는 시각에 대해서 기술해 보고자 한다. 특별히 그들의 역사 이해 방법과 영성(靈性, Spirituality), 그리스도 인의 사회, 윤리적 기능과 역할을 재조명해보려 한다. 그리스도인으로 세상을 살아가면서 거룩한 구별됨과 열정을 가지고 가르침을 삶과 행동으로 실천하며 살아갈 때 이 땅은 변혁될 것임을 믿는다.

Jacques Ellul(1912-1994) and Francis A. Schaeffer(1912-1984) were both representative evangelical intellectuals devoted to a faithful Christian living while criticizing contemporary civilization. They believed that Christian faith was still meaningful in modern society and would correct the evil practices of modern society. They were not only the best intellectuals at the times who criticized many ills of the contemporary society based on their Christian faith but also activists who carried out significant actions. They proclaimed the Gospel to the world providing prophetic visions and insights so that lay Christians can have proper perspective upon the world. They offered social and ethical responsibility for Christians living in a technology-based-world regarding the Bible as the absolute value. By their actions and lives, Ellul and Schaeffer revealed Christian influence to the world and emphasized their role as ‘light and salt.’ Thus it is possible enough to say that their intellectual heights, passionate faith, influences and challenges to the world set the living standard for Christians in the 21st century. In this paper, I compared Ellul and Schaeffer’s theology and perception on the Christian society in order to describe Christian perspective upon the world. I believe that their historical understanding, spirituality, social and ethical role and responsibility as Christians deserve greater attention. I also believe that Christians can transform the world when they put their faith and teaching into actions with passion and holiness.
