교사들이 생각하는 민주주의 역사교육 내용 구성과 적용 가능성 탐색󰠏 전근대 영역을 중심으로 󰠏

Democratic History Education Contents that Teachers think: Focusing on the Pre-Modern History

많은 사람들은 민주시민의 자질을 양성하는 것을 사회과 교육목적으로 동의하면서도 민주주의 관점으로 역사교육의 내용을 구성하는 것을 우려한다. 특히, 역사교사들은 전근대사를 민주주 의로 구성을 해야 한다면 자유, 평등, 인간존중 등의 민주적인 요소나 가치에 맞는 역사적 사례를 찾아내는 방식을 많이 제시했기 때문에 전근대사 영역에 민주주의 관점을 적용하는 것은 다소 무리가 있다고 생각하였다. 이런 방식으로 내용을 구성할 경우 발전사관으로 흐를 가능성이 높으며 시대별 우열 비교로 빠질 가능성이 있다. 또 한 시대의 모습을 당 시대 질서로 파악하지 않고 근현대의 개념인 민주주의 요소로 재단하여 당시 전체 모습을 제대로 구현하지 못할 가능성도 우려 하였다. 일부 교사들은 민주주의의 대체 개념을 찾아 민주주의 역사교육 내용 구성의 가능성을 타진하 고자 하였는데, 민본주의, 인본주의, 민(民)중심의 역사 내용이 바로 그것이다. 또 역사교육의 내용을 구성하기는 어렵지만 수업활동으로는 민주주의를 충분히 구현할 수 있다고 보았는데, 과거 사건과 현재를 비교하는 설명방식이나 토론식 수업 등을 통한 대화, 타협의 과정을 경험해보는 방식으로 가능성을 찾으려고 하였다. 교사들의 논의를 토대로 볼 때, 민주주의로 전근대사 내용영역을 구성하기 위해서는 당시대의 전체상은 당시 질서에 맞게 서술하려고 노력하되, 교과서 집필자가 민주주의 요소나 가치를 기준 으로 역사적 사건에 대해 평가를 제시하는 방식이 가능하다. 당시대의 전체상을 민주주의 요소나 가치로 미화, 과장, 왜곡하지 않고 있는 그대로 드러낸 상태에서 집필자의 역사적 평가나 해석을 허용해야 한다. 또 민(民)으로 대변되는 피지배층의 모습을 더 보완하여 다양한 과거 행위자들이 교과서 서술에 드러나게 하는 방식도 고려해 볼 만 하다.

Democratic citizenship development is the purpose of social education. Most of history teachers agreed to this purpose. However most people were concerned about the contents of history textbook written based on democracy perspectives. They worried that history textbooks could not adequately express the situation of people in the past. So, they thought that the students did not understand the people of that time properly. As an alternative to this, a textbook writer should objectively describe the whole person and situation in time. And they can evaluate the descriptions of the textbooks based on the factors and values of democracy. In addition, the various subjects of descriptive including those to be ruled are appear in history textbook. A various people based on pluralistic perspective should be presented in textbooks and curriculum. people and situation in the past should be expressed without distortion on textbook. On the other hand, during history classes students should have the opportunity to talk about the historical contents based on conversation and compromise.
