Objectives : Generally speaking, alcohol use in pregnancy is one of the extremely serious public health issues causing irreversible sequela such in the fetus: as fetal alcohol spectrum disorders, abortion, and sudden infant death syndrome of newborn children. However, there is apparently no nationwide research on the prevalence of this issue noted in a search and literature review of the subject applicable to patient populations in Korea. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the treatment prevalence and features of drinking within a pregnancy in the Korean population of pregnant women, by use of the Health Insurance Review and Assessment (HIRA) Service Database. Methods : Our study analyzed the frequencies and rates of pregnant women who were treated with problems related to alcohol, using data collected from the HIRA during the timeframe of 2010-2015 according to regions and ages by year. Results : The results of the study noted that the average prevalence of the treatment due to drinking in pregnancy was 1.30%, and the correlating drinking rates in pregnant women who were adolescents and ad-vanced maternal ages were higher than in their 25-34 years. Additionally, it is noted that more patients utilized intensive inpatient treatment than compared to outpatient treatment for this identified problem. Conclusion : Our results suggest that the associated treatment rate would be seriously low compared with real prevalence of alcohol use during pregnancy, and we suggest that more prospective studies are conducted with various subdivided age groups to determine further results on this issue.
