It was not until the late Koryo period that Tangun(檀君) came to be regarded as the beginning of the early history of Old Chosun(古朝鮮). However, even before the Koryo period, Tangun(檀君) was apparently known and worshiped as a god of local safety and prosperity. It was also closely related with the theories of the geomancer’s art(圖讖). This paper tried to reveal the meaning of Tangun(檀君) in Koryo society and to appreciate its function.
