Applicability of Biomass Micro-Gasification Cooking Stoves associated with Residential Culture

바이오 매스 가스화 기술은 임업 부산물 또는 농업 잔재의 형태로 버려져 왔던 바이오매스를 실용적인 연료로 활용할 수 있는 방식이다. 우리나라의 경우 조리용과 난방용으로 많이 써 온 장작은 연소실에서 고온에 노출되는 체적이 넓다 보니 비효율적으로 연소된다. 이와는 달리 작은 조각형태나 알갱이 형태 등 타기 힘든 바이오매스는 제어된 공기 -연료비 하에서 열분해(pyrolysis)와 가스화(gasification)를 통해 가연성 가스로 전환할 수 있다. 바이오매스 가스화 기술은 다양한 목질계 원료를 연료로 쓸 수 있게 할뿐만 아니라, 정제할 경우 청정연소를 가능케 한다. 우리나라의 농촌지역이나 개발도상국과 같이 다양한 유형의 바이오매스를 쉽게 발견할 수 있는 환경이라면 소형 가스화 화덕의 적용을 늘리는 것이 합리적일 수 있다. 고형연료를 열분해와 가스화를 거쳐 얻은 가스연료로 태우는 것이 직접연소보다 더 많은 이익을 주기 때문이다. 그러나 구할 수 있는 바이오 매스의 종류와 가스화 화덕의 적용가능성(applicability)은 주거문화에 따라 달라진다. 본 논문에서는 바이오매스 가스화 화덕의 실용적 개발에 앞서 검토해야 할 기본적이면서도 문화적 요소들에 대해 고찰하였다.

Biomass gasification technology is a way to utilize biomass, which has been abandoned in the form of forestry byproducts or agricultural residues, as a practical fuel. In Korea, firewood has been widely used for cooking and heating, but burns inefficiently because it is exposed in large volume unnecessarily to high temperatures in the combustion chamber. In contrast, some kinds of biomass like small wood flakes or rice husks, which are difficult to burn, can convert to combustible gases through pyrolysis and gasification under regulated air-fuel ratio in a reactor. Biomass gasification technology not only makes it possible to use various woody raw materials as fuel, but also enables clean combustion when refined. It might be reasonable to increase the application of small gasification stoves since various types of biomass are abundant in the surrounding environment in rural districts in Korea or developing countries. It is because that burning gaseous fuel from the pyrolysis and gasification bring more benefits than a direct combustion of solid fuels. However, the type of biomass collectable and the applicability of the gasification stoves are dependant on the residential culture. In this paper, basic and cultural factors were reviewed before attempting development of the biomass gasification stoves.
