A Web Service for Analyzing Tourist Routes based on Open Data Platform : Focus on Jeju Island

Purpose - Mining the cause of popularity or unpopularity of a tourist route in a specific time interval plays an important role in seeking a tourism strategy. However, existing tools on tourist routes analysis failed to help users figure out factors influencing tourist routes, because these tools merely visualize tourist routes using lines in a map. Researchers who want to figure out the causes of popularity of unpopularity of a tourist route may wish to be given information that can explain the tourist route. The purpose of this study is therefore to provide users with more information used to find factors related to tourist routes. Research design, data, and methodology - Among many factors influencing tourist routes, we selected festivals. We are based on an expectation that the popularity or unpopularity of a tourist routes can partially be explained by the location and time of a festival. It is therefore required to visualize both tourist routes and festivals in a screen. To achieve this, we implemented a web-based visualization tool that shows tourist routes and festivals in the same map. We obtain tourist routes data from Jejudatahub, festival information from Korean Tourism API, and geometric information from Google Geocoding API. Our web service obtains all the information using REST call and then link them in real-time to visualize it together in the Daum map. Results - The web service is available via a web browser. Users are allowed to use the service within limits imposed by the data providers, such as jejedatahub, Korean Tourism API, and Google Geocoding API. These service will deny requests from the proposed web service if the number of requests exceed the allowed limits in a day. If users input a time interval, the web service visualizes a map marked with tourist routes and festivals that are active in the given time interval. Conclusions - One of important roles of researchers on tourist route analysis is to figure out the causes of popularity or unpopularity of a tourist route. The proposed web service is expected to reduce the efforts of these researchers. In the furture work, we will extend the web service to provide more information, such as credit car payment history.
