The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors affecting self-esteem depending on the demographic characteristics and each category and accordingly make educational materials for orthognathic surgery patients. The subjects of this study were a total of 100 patients who visited the department of oral and maxillofacial surgery of a university hospital located in Yangsan, Gyeongsangnam-do, and underwent orthognathic surgery from July to August in 2016. Characteristics of orthognathic surgery were one jaw operation (27%) and double jaw operation (73%). Personal interview surveys about self-esteem were conducted before and after orthognathic surgery for one month. The mean scores of self-esteem were increased following orthognathic surgery in all questions. In particular, self-satisfaction was highly increased after orthognathic surgery (pre-operation 3.48 ± 0.96 vs post-operation 4.16 ± 0.76, p<0.001). The study results indicated that the surgical effects of orthognathic surgery had a positive impact on the patients. Since self-esteem was improved after one jaw or double jaw surgery, it is considered necessary to conduct an educational program for oral health management after surgery.
