Asabasicworkforexploringanddiscussiontheclinicalvalueofsymbolsinpsychotherapy,theorigins ofsymbolsand theirmeaningsdefined in variousacademicfields,theuniversal/personalsourcesof symbols,andtherolesanddevelopmentalsignificanceofsymbolsinthedevelopmentofchildren’splay wereexamined.Firstly,toexplorethepsychotherapeuticfactorsofsymbols,thetherapeuticvalueof symbolsexpressed in children’splaywasdiscussed from thepsychoanalyticapproachesofFreud and MelanieKlein.Next,thefunctionsandtherapeuticvaluesofsymbolsinthepsychotherapyprocesswere discussedbasedonthetheoryofsymbolism whichistherepresentativetheoryofsymbolresearch.In thisdiscussion,thetheoreticresearchofVerenaKast(1992)andtheclinicalresearchresultsofDora Kalff(1966) were applied. Furthermore, the practice of various clinical studies to enrich the psychotherapeuticvalueofsymbolswasproposed.
