This study was conducted to survey the status of teaching instruments for Practical Arts education of elementary school in Chuncheon. Data were collected from July 1 to 12 in 1997 supported by the Board of Education, Chuncheon. Among fifty-two elementary schools in Chuncheon (including ten elementary branch schools), thirty-eight schools were included in the analysis using SPSS. The results of this study were as follows: 1. Given the standards for teaching instruments for Practical Arts education in elementary school, the number of the instruments for total sixty-nine items was divided into three levels: ‘zero’ (none), ‘under standard’ (less than 1), and ‘standard’ (1 and more). The range of 15.8 to 100% of schools reported zero level of instruments. Items which had more than 50% of standard level were only eight items whose standards were either school or class. 2. Large number of the estimates of instruments were lower than the standards. Among sixty-nine items, only forteen were at standard level. 3. Twenty-two items showed statistically significant correlation between the estimates of instruments and the number of students (r=-.330~-.697). The more the number of students, the less the estimates of instruments for Practical Arts education. 4. Schools in countryside of Chuncheon showed significantly higher estimates of instruments than those of schools in city. The areas with higher estimates were gardening, rearing, handcrafts, computer, and house management except needle work and cooking. 5. No working places for Practical Arts education were reported except computer lab. Practice for Practical Arts was usually performed at classrooms. This study showed that current status of teaching instruments for Practical Arts education of elementary school in Chuncheon is much lower than the level required for the education based on the Sixth Elementary Curriculum. Therefore, it is urgent to prepare adequate number of teaching instruments. Minimum standards for the instruments must be developed considering locations and situations of elementary schools. Further, Practical Arts education must be provided by teachers who have specialties in that area. In addition, working places should be provided for qualified Practical Arts education.
