Design of a Holistic Program for the Unit Concerning Life and Environment in Practical Arts Education

This study aims at designing and applying a holistic learning program and setting an instructional strategy for the integrated unit concerning life and environment in the elementary subject of practical arts education. To achieve this goal, the following questions were set. 1) To diagnose the validity of reconstructing a holistic program based on application and integration 2) To design a holistic program model based on application and integration 3) To apply an instructional strategy using a holistic program based on application and integration This study obtained the following results. First, the comparison in educational and environmental variables of holistic education and practical arts education to examine validity of reconstructing a holistic program based on application and integration revealed that they commonly aimed at nurturing independent persons, at respecting life, and at providing autonomous education; thus, a holistic learning program was reconstructed for the integrated unit concerning life and environment in practical arts education. Second, a holistic program model based on application and integration was designed by altering the Kim’s (1995) five-stage model from the Teaching-Learning Model to Integrate Practical Tasks to the four-stage model consisting of Preparation for Learning, Presentation of Problems, Problem Solution, and Summary. Third, to develop materials for practical activities in holistic education, a total of twelve-hour syllabus was established with 「2. Clean Living Environment」 and 「3. Cultivation of Flowers and Vegetables」in practical arts education for fifth-graders.
