This study was designed to help elementary school children develop into sound, nutrition-conscious consumers. It, therefore, investigated the need for consumer education in elementary nutrition education, established the objects and content of nutrition education based on child consumer education, and developed practical activities for students which could be applied to nutrition education in our elementary schools. Concrete and practical reasons are suggested for children to be educated about proper nutritional habits in order that they develop the consumer abilities that they will need in facing changing consumption environments. The object of elementary nutrition and consumer education is to improve the child’s consumer abilities in the evaluation of foodstuffs, in rational purchasing, and citizenship responsibilities; and, of course, to help them to develop into positive consumers. The content of this education is: 1) value education about consumption based on the consumer’s morals, ethics, and culture; 2) management education on the sources of economic knowledge and money management; 3) purchase education based on decision making, goods information, choice of goods, and the evaluation of purchased goods; and 4) education of the consumer’s role based on the protection of the environment, the rights and responsibilities of consumers, and the problems and protection of consumers. These activities, which directly apply to elementary school education, include the evaluation of processed foodstuffs using the attached nutrition labels, the recording of the purchase of foods, the monitering of TV commercials about foodstuffs and meals, the creation of commercials about foodstuffs, and appropriate role play. In conclusion, this study notes that consumer education is lacking in our elementary nutrition education, and suggests practical methods to improve elementary consumer education.
