This study investigated the contents on life science in the 7th elementary school curriculum to analyse the current education situation and to suggest the direction of the future curriculum. In order to count the contents on life science, all elementary school textbooks of the 7th curriculum were analyzed. All elementary school textbooks contained total 137 contents on life science, and they were classified into 5 major categories such as zoology(36.5%), botany(29.9%), microbiology(10.2%), environmental biology(16.8%) and biotechnology(6.6%). Among the elementary subjects, ‘Korean Language’, ‘Science’, ‘Wise Life’ and ‘Practical Arts’ contained many good contents on life science. The lower level textbooks contained more contents on zoology and botany field grade than those of the higher. Contrarily, the higher level textbooks contained more contents on microbiology, environmental biology and biotechnology than those of the lower level, since the contents on these three fields are very difficult to lower level students. The contents on life science in the 7th elementary school curriculum are properly dispersed through the whole grade. But, some contents are out of date since life science area is growing very fast. Particularly, since the Practical Arts still contains more past?oriented contents than future?oriented contents, it should contain more future?oriented contents in the next edition. Twenty?first century is the age of technology, it is mainly consisted of biotechnology, information technology and nanotechnology. Thus, the Science and Technology for Life subject, ‘Practical Arts’ needs to make considerable change to contain more future?oriented contents, in order to take up a position in the center of the elementary curriculum.
