The objectives of the study were to a)research and analyze the understanding and needs of the parents of the students for the contents of ‘family life’ in practical arts education of the elementary schools, b)offer a new direction in the program for the education of ‘family life’ for the elementary school students, and c)reconsider the contents of practical arts education as the education of ‘family life’. In order to achieve the objectives of the study, the literatures and the theses related to the contents were considered. And the needs of the parents of the students in 5th and 6th grade of the elementary schools in the five schools in five gus in the city of Daejeon were researched. And 283 questionnaires were used for the analysis. For the method of statistics for the analysis of the result of the survey, SPSS 10.0 was used, The conclusions and suggestions of the study are as following : There should be social agreement on the establishment of theory of healthy family and the needs and practice of the education of family life in the elementary schools. In order to meet the parents’ needs of family life education for healthy family, there should be the understanding of healthy family as functional meaning and the justifiable agreement on the needs and practice of family life education. Educational meaning of the contents of practical arts education as family life education should be re-established and the ways for the students and their parents to understand the needs of the education should be studied. There should be the change of the contents that the parents thought unnecessary and the ways for teaching and learning, for the students to learn the contents, internalize the true meaning kept in the contents, and be able to show their intellectual and moral abilities in their family lives after all.
