Trends and Issues in Practical Arts Education Research

The purposes of this study were to examine research trends in Practical Arts Education from 1985 through 2006 and to make some suggestions for future developments in this field. Data from 619 journal articles and 497 theses/dissertations were reviewed for the study. The major aspects of each study that were coded on the coding forms were: study source, publication date, authors’ professional affiliation, study area, research field, research methodology. The findings indicated that: (1) the increase of the journals and graduate programs contributed to qualitative and quantitative developments in practical arts education research; (2) main author of journal articles was professor; (3) research was channeled into specific areas such as curriculum, teaching and learning methods, and text/teaching materials; (4) the preferred study area and field were quite different in study source; and (5) studies were concentrated on research methodology by literature review and survey.
