The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of Problem Based Learning (PBL) on the attitude toward Practical Arts Subject and problem solving ability. To achieve the purpose of the study, two classes of 64 students in 5th grade of ‘O’ Elementary School located in Daegu Metropolitan City were sampled and divided into an experiment group and a comparative group, to which PBL and regular instructions respectively were applied. After the experiment, the tests of the attitude toward the Practical Arts Subject and of the problem solving ability were administered, and the effects of PBL on those areas were carefully examined. The conclusions of the study are as follows : First, the PBL-applied instruction on ‘Lesson 8. Making Household-Goods with Needles and Threads’ in 5th grade practical arts showed more improvements on the attitude toward practical arts than the regular instruction. Hence, it can be said that the PBL-applied instruction is more effective to the attitude toward practical arts. Second, there existed statistically significant difference between the PBL instruction provided group and the regular instruction provided group. Therefore, PBL-applied instruction was effective to improve problem solving ability. As above, it is necessary to systematically apply PBL in the current curriculum in order to promote the attitude toward practical arts and the problem solving ability.
