The purpose of this study was to analyse comparatively the speech acts of requests, invitations, and refusals in primary English textbooks, ELT materials, and Discourse Completion Tasks (DCT). It was also intended to draw implications on how to improve the authenticity and the quality of dialogues in English textbooks. Data were collected from 5th and 6th grade English textbooks written by five different main authors, five different ELT materials designed for teaching children, and DCT completed by 26 native English speakers. The data were analysed in terms of frequency and features of strategy use for each speech act. The results indicated that in the case of requests, textbook dialogues need to employ multiple strategies and a greater range of strategy use. As for invitations, pre-invitation and insert expansion should be used more frequently in textbooks to provide learners with more natural language input involving invitation situations. With regards to refusal, more various refusal strategies should be used in textbooks including the agreement strategy which was only used in DCT. Limitations of the current study and recommendations for further studies were also discussed.
