This article presents cases where those masks, called tals, which symbolize the archetypal energy of the collective unconscious, are symbolized psychologically in sandplay therapy. Although masks symbolize the persona, they also symbolize the archetypal unconscious. The two cases presented in this article illustrate the two functions possessed by archetypal images. The first case shows that tals are transcendent symbols related to the numinous, the sacred, and in particular, the aspect of the Self that contains all opposites. The other case shows that tals are archetypal, and that when the ego cannot function properly due to trauma, a very sadistic and negatively fantastic archetypal defense may be developed so that reality is perceived as being sadistic and cruel, so as to prevent the individual from experiencing more traumas.
