Background: Cadmium is known to be a widespread environmental pollutant and a potential toxin that may adversely affect human health. The kidney is the main organ affected by chronic cadmium exposure and toxicity. The present study examines the associations between albuminuria and serum cadmium levels using data from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2011∼2013). Methods: The total number of study subjects was 1,183 aged 60 years or older. Logistic regression analysis was performed to determine the relationship between serum cadmium level and urinary albumin-creatinine ratio (30 mg/g). The level of cadmium in the blood was divided into quintile groups. Results: The logistic regression analysis showed that there was no statistically significant relationship between serum cadmium levels and urinary albumin creatinine ratios, which were not corrected for other variables (P=0.069). However, sex, age, drinking (P for trend=0.043), all of the analytical models that corrected for alcohol consumption, smoking, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, BMI, and serum creatinine level showed statistically significant results (P for trend=0.025). Conclusion: Blood cadmium concentration is closely related to kidney function in Korean adults over 60 years.
