Wood properties of several softwoods and hardwoods are written in a natioanal textbook and guidebook for teachers as basic knowledge for making wooden products of practical arts education of the sixth grade of elementary school. But, scientific explanations on wood kinds and wood properties are not properly given in the books. Therefore, it would be hard to say that these explanations on wood kinds and wood properties are the best way for effective practical arts education. This investigated report was carried out to give an effective way for practicing the creativity education in practical arts education. Wood properties of softwoods(Red pine, Korean pine and Japanese larch) and hardwoods(Zelkova tree, Korean paulownia and American plane tree) are examined and analyzed. From some investigations on taxonomical, anatomical, physical and mechanical properties, several recommendations were done on a national textbook of practical arts education of the sixth grade of elementary school. Contents recommended are as follows : 1) It is recommended that the content such as “Trunk in softwood grows up upright” is added to contents on softwoods in the present textbook. 2) It is recommended to replace American plane tree(platanus) with cork oak because cork oak has more properties than platanus as a hardwood.
