The Effect of Problem Solving Instruction in Practical Arts Subject on Children’s Creativity and Self-Efficacy

The purpose of this study was to examine the effect on children’s creativity and self-efficacy by using problem-solving instruction in practical arts subject. The subjects in this study were students in two third grade classes of elementary school. The test instruments employed in this study were the Creativity and Thinking Faculty Test developed by the Korea Creativity Research Institute and the revised self-efficacy test from Shere Maddux’s questionnaire and Jung Taek Hee’s questionnaire. The findings of this study were 1. the pretest and the post-test of experimental class, where teacher utilized problem-solving instruction, showed a significant difference in creativity sub-areas including ‘fluency’, ‘flexibility’, and ‘originality’: 2. the pretest and the post-test of control group, which received typical instruction, showed a significant difference in creativity sub-areas including ‘fluency’ and ‘flexibility’: 3. when the two classes were compared with each other after experiment, the experimental class were significantly better in creativity than the control class: Finally, the experimental class that received problem-solving instruction got higher average in self-efficacy.
