The Study on Constructivist Approach to Family Life Education

The purpose in this study is to investigate the possibility of applying constructivist theory in family life education, and develop a constructivist-based teaching model for family life education. Theoretical and practical common ground of constructivist theory and practical science is to be discussed. The reason is that family life education is subject matter education to be based on constructivism for educational theory and practical science paradigm for the mission of home economics. Constructivism and practical science paradigm are similar in the definition of knowledge, the purpose of education like practical problem-solver, self-directed learner and reflective thinker, the selection standards of educational content like feasibility and practicality, and teaching-learning methods. A developed constructivist-based teaching model for family life education is a circular process composed of attaining basic knowledge, proposing practical problem, solving practical problem by practical reasoning process, presenting results of small group discussion, making consensus, acting, and reflecting the action.
