A Study on the Systematization of Goals and Contents in Practical Arts Education

This study was initiated from the probing question of “How should we set forth the educational goals and curriculum contents of Practical Arts. The study employed the Delphi Method to reach a consensus with the experts in each related educational field of study for putting forth a newly proposed theoretical framework of a Practical Arts curriculum. From the 3-round Delphi survey, the following conclusions on the nature and characteristics of, structural framework of curriculum contents, and literacy through practical arts were drawn. 1. Practical Arts is a subject matter with the following specific characteristics: Practical life oriented subject’ from the viewpoint of educational goal, Integrated knowledge oriented subject’ from the viewpoint of educational content, and Creative hands on oriented subject’ from the viewpoint of educational methodology. 2. The theoretical structure for organizing the practical arts curriculum was established by content-based knowledge and the process-based knowledge. First, the content-based knowledge consisted of two domains; one is an independent discipline structure (home economics, the study of technology, biological science) and the other is an integrated discipline structure (information communication technology, life environments, work and career). Second, the process-based knowledge was proposed in four steps: exploring and identifying, studying and planning, performance and practice, and assessment and reflection. 3. The primary literacy of Practical Arts education was ‘practically literates person in life’. The lists of life literacy for practical arts education were proposed knowledge aspect, practical aspect, and value and attitude aspect.
