Implications and Directions for Practical Arts as a Core Curriculum in Elementary Education

The purpose of this study was to present some curriculum implications for practical arts education to becoming elementary core subjects. The study was conducted by literature review. A new direction for curriculum organization was suggested based on synthesizing and analyzing the trends of curriculum design in elementary school programs as well as practical arts education. Literature review revealed that there were positive and negative research results related to practical arts subject. Some studies proposed that school curriculum in the future would be directed to getting school curriculum slim and cross-curricular activities enlarge. There were some reports on the international trends. The results of studies, especially related to practical arts subject, were slightly different because researchers employed different criteria on analyzing the similar data. Elementary school teachers’ opinion on practical arts subject were revealed negatively. The directions for new curriculum organization heading to core subject in elementary school were suggested. It could be summarized that the new curriculum should reflect the social changes with remaining the essentials of practical arts. Also there were some suggestions to make practical arts become a core subject in elementary school.
