Perception and Needs Assessment of Elementary School Teachers’ on Home Economics Area in Practical Arts Education

The purpose of this study was to identify the needs on the curriculum, operation and contents of home economics in practical arts education through perception and assessment of the needs od elementary school teachers’ home economics area in practical arts education. The obtained results on this study were as follows: 1. Elementary school teachers’ needs in curriculum of home economics area were high. The highest needs were shown on equipments and facilities required for practical guidance, which suggested that the equipments and facilities required for practical teaching in the front line of education should be obtained. 2. The needs assessments in operation of home economics area. In utilization of discretion activities, the food and cooking area indicated higher needs than other areas. The needs of living resources management and consumption life were high in terms of the areas to put more weight. The difficult area in terms of teaching in the home economics was clothing. The facilities required for teaching and learning were mostly needed as a bottleneck in practicing of home economics. The matter to be improved was supplementation of facilities, which was the most urgent. 3. In the needs of education contents in home economics, the needs of family life, living resource of management and consumption life were very high in the 7th practical arts education curriculum. According to the teachers’ social demographic variables, even significance level was indicated by areas. In clothing area, teachers who taught 5th and 6th graders showed the lowest needs, which was presumably arising from the lack of practicing equipment necessary for teaching of clothing. 4. In terms of the resource management and consumption life areas in the 6th practical arts education curriculum, the needs were high. In clothing area the needs of teachers who had the experience of teaching practical arts education were high. In food and cooking area, female teachers showed higher needs. The teachers who had the experiences in teaching practical arts education showed higher needs in the food and cooking area, living resource and consumption life area. All of these seemed to indicate the needs of professionalism in practical arts education. Based on the results in this study, the following suggestions were presented. With regard to re-development plans as well as educational administrative cooperation for realistic contents, suitable level and contents and obtaining of equipments and facilities should be prepared by reflecting the needs in home economics area. Follow-up study should be conducted in food and cooking area, bottlenecks in teaching of clothing, due to lack of facilities, updated contents and teaching materials.
