Strategies of Character Education through Home Economics Area of Practical Arts Education in Elementary Schools

The purpose of this study was to suggest the strategies of character education through home economics area of practical arts education in elementary school. Toachieve this purposes, concept, contents, and educational methods of character education in elementary were inquired. After that, the analysis of purposes and contents home economics area in practical arts education were conducted. Based on the analysis, the results were drawn as follows; First, the goals of character education could be implemented through the home economics area of the practical arts education in elementary school. The goals of character education could be implemented directly through ‘Comprehension of family life’, ‘Management of life resources’ area but ‘life skill’ was implemented indirectly. Furthermore, the goals of character education could be implemented by ‘moral behavior’ such as moral abilities, moral will, and moral habits in home economics area. Second, the contents of character education, such as ‘civic awareness’, ‘altruism’, and ‘self-esteem’ were included in home economics area of practical arts education. Especially, ‘civic awareness’, ‘altruism’, and ‘self-esteem’ were included in ‘Comprehension of family life’, ‘Management of life resources’ area and ‘environmental awareness’ included in ‘life skill’ area. Third, there should be a practical and inquisitive teaching-learning method and assessment for the character education through the home economics of practical arts education: Also, each unit of home economics needs connection with various activities in school, home and the regional community. The conclusion that the home economics area of practical arts education performed important roles in character education, was lead from the results above. Despite the result that the moral knowledge and moral emotion could not be implemented through home economics area in of practical arts education, the moral knowledge and moral emotion could be implemented through agriculture area in practical arts education and ethics, music, art, and gymnastic education.
