The Learning of Home Economics in Practical Arts through Discretionary Activities

This study investigated the learning possibilities and methods of Home economics in Practical Arts through discretionary activities, and developed an application program for learning through discretionary activities. It should be possible to study Home Economics through discretionary activities because the learning contents and methods correspond closely to those of discretionary activities. For effective Home Economics learning through discretionary activities, the learning contents (learning subjects) should be selected using an interdisciplinary, integration approach that considers children’s interests and concerns. Problem solving, project learning, and home projects that could improve their self-directed learning ability should be applied to learning activities. An application program for discretionary activities was developed through an interdisciplinary, integration approach. It could be applied to the 5th and 6th grades. The subject was ‘New Year’s Day’. Children would learn it’s meaning, etiquette, customs, foods, and foreign costumes through the program. They also could learn the basic characteristics of the home and interactions between family members, and experience cooking and the making of clothing in Home economics. Character, energy, safety, labor, Korean original culture and international culture that are emphasized in the discretionary activities could be learned through this program. In Conclusion, it would be a program meeting both the educational needs of Home Economics and the educational necessity of discretionary activities in elementary schools.
