The purpose of this study was to investigate the attitudes toward pet animal of elementary school students and their relationships with pet ownership and child-pet interaction. The population for this study consisted of all the 5th and 6th grade students currently attending at elementary schools in Seoul, Kyunggi, and Taegu. Four hundred and forty students were sampled stratified randomly for this study. A survey instrument including pet ownership items, child-pet interaction scale, and attitudes toward pet animal scale was developed and used for data collection. Statistical analysis of responses indicated that elementary students had a positive attitudes toward pet animals; that boys’ attitudes were more positive than girls’; that the attitudes were substantially explained by child-pet interaction, while the attitudes were related with pet ownership and child-pet interaction; and that child-pet interaction was the consistent substantial predictor of the attitudes irrespective of the kind of pet owned by children.
