한국 학부모들의 미국 초등학교 교과에 대한 인식

Awareness for American Elementary Textbooks of Korean Students’ Parents

This study examined the awareness of American textbooks by Korean parents residing in America and teaching-learning activities of American schools and the degree of using American textbooks for their children’s education, gave 50 questionnaires to 37 parents who sent their children to community school in Columbus of Ohio State, U.S.A., collected and analyzed 40 questionnaires responses. The results of this study can be summarized as follows. 1) On the question of knowing the progress of learning at school, they showed the highest answer at “through information from school”. 2) On the question of frequently used method for controlling students in America, “use of sticker” was highest and major subjects in American schools included English, mathematics, social studies and science. 3) As a result of presenting more difficult subjects than Korean ones to parents, social studies was most difficult, followed by science and English and the difficulty of social studies was because cooperative learning related to social culture was required more. And easier subjects compared to Korean ones were mathematics, music, art and physical education and subjects requiring textbooks by students when they study were social studies, science, mathematics and English. 4) Children’s most favorite subjects were mathematics, art, music and physical education and on the question of giving textbooks to each child, higher graders felt no needs of individual textbooks and in teaching styles, lower graders took part in more cooperative learning.
