Children’s perception of Family Life, attitude towards gender roles and family type and Family-related issues reflected in School Textbooks

This study systematically investigates children’s perception of their family life, family values and family life depicted in school textbooks. 687 elementary school-aged children in 5th and 6th grade in various cities (capital city, mid and small size cities, and small towns such as Eup and Myeon) were selected. First, the children perceived their family atmosphere to be positive and female children had more positive perceptions compared to their male counterparts. The majority of the children expressed that their parents share housework Also, the results show that the children participated in housework to a moderate degree, and the participation degree of female children was found to be higher than that of the male children. Second, the children had a positive attitude towards both types of nuclear family and extended family. However, the children demonstrated negative attitudes towards family types such as single parent families or families without parents. Third, the perceived degree of equality within family members was high. The degree perceived by female children was higher than that of male children. the children showed positive attitudes toward the idealized family depictions reflected in school textbooks. This indicates that the children regard that family atmosphere, family types, and gender roles exhibited in school textbooks are idealized. Finally, it was found that their own family life and had influence on family life in textbooks. In particular, the children’s attitude towards gender roles and family type have significant effects on family life illustrated in school textbooks.
