다산 시에 있어서 개에 대한 상징과 그 의미

Symbol and meaning of dogs in Dasan’s poem

본 논문은 다산 시에 있어서 개에 대한 상징과 그 의미를 살펴본 것이다. 그 이유는 다산이 조선후기를 대표하는 실학자이며 주목 받는 시인이기 때문이다. 그러나 연구 결과 다산이 개와 관련된 내용을 시로 노래한 작품은 그리 많지 않다. 먼저 ‘개에 대한 다산의 인식’에서는 다산이 개에 대한 다양한 식견을 지닌 인물이었음을 알 수 있었다. 요컨대 개가 비천한 인식에서 벗어나 병법, 보물, 속담, 신선 등 여러 분야에서 작품속의 소재로 활용 되었던 것이다. 나아가 형님인 정약전에게 흑산도에 흔하게 돌아다나는 산개를 잡아 보양할 것을 당부하는 내용에서는 애틋한 형제애를 엿볼 수 있으며, 朴齊家에게 배운 식용 법을 상세하게 알려줌은 삶을 영위하기 위해서는 산개를 식용으로 사용해야 한다는 그의 실학사상과 일정한 관련이 있어 보인다. 다음 ‘개에 대한 詩語’를 두 장르로 구분하였다. 첫째, ‘기쁨의 대상’에서는 다산이 살 만한 전답을 찾아보기 위해 다니다가 들은 닭소리와 개소리에도 기쁨을 가눌수 없다고 한다. ‘한낮에 龍淵에서 쉬며’라는 제목에서는 개를 삼경의 시각을 함께 즐김의 대상물로 승화하고 있다. ‘박 넝쿨에 희미한 초승달이 비치는 모습’을 노래한 작품에서도 유일하게 함께한 시인의 동반자는 ‘개’라는 사실에 주목하고 있다. 둘째, ‘폭정의 상징’에서는 아전들이 파지 마을 들이닥쳐 수탈하는 광경을 ‘개 닭 몰 듯’이라 형상화 하였고, 관리를 위해 가마를 메는 사람을 통해 그 고통 토로한 작품에서도 ‘개와 닭처럼 마구 몰아대어’라고 하여 관리들의 폭정을 고발하는 대상으로 삼았다. 이러한 논의는 조선후기 당대 학자들의 개에 대한 인식을 살피는데 일조가 되리라 생각되며 다산의 또 다른 실학사상의 일면을 관찰에 보탬이 되리라 생각한다.

This paper focused on the symbol and the meaning of dogs. Because Dasan is a scholar representing the late Joseon Dynasty and noted poet. But, as a result of the research, there are not so many poems that Dasan sang related to dogs. First of all, ‘Dasan’s recognition of dogs’ showed that Dasan was a person with various insights about dogs. In short, the dog was deviated from the low perception and used as a material in his works in various fields such as tactics, treasure, proverb, and taoist hermit. Furthermore, on the message that he asks Jeong Yakjeon, his older brother, to catch a mountain dog that commonly wanders in Heuksando Island for health, we can see his brotherly affection. And the detailed explanation of the edible method taught by Park Jega seems to be related to his Practical Thought that a mountain dog should be used for food in order to lead life. Next, he classified ‘poetic depiction of dogs’ into two genres. First, In ‘the object of pleasure’, it is said that he can not control with joy in the sounds of chickens and dogs he heard while trying to find a good farmland to live in. In the title of ‘resting at Yongyeon in the middle of the day’, the dog sublimates into the object of enjoying the time of midnight. A poem that songs ‘the appearance of a faint crescent moon reflected in a gourd vine’ is also paying attention to the fact that the only poet’s companion is a dog. Second, in the ‘symbol of tyranny’, the scene of ajeons-a petty official of a provincial town-breaking into the Phage town and taking off them was described as ‘a dog seems to drive a chicken’. And in the work that expresses the pain through the person who carries a palanquin for the officials, the dog was made as an object of accusing the tyranny of officials by saying ‘urge like dogs and chickens.’ I think that this discussion will contribute to the study of the perception of dogs of the contemporary scholars in the late Joseon Dynasty and it will be helpful to observe one side of Dasan’s another Practical Thought.
