경학사적 관점에서 살펴본 조선경학에서의 ‘ 古 ’ 의 지향

The Orientation towards Go( ) in the Kyunghak from the Historical Perspective of the Kyunghak in the Joseon Dynasty : Focusing on the Analysis of Important Conceptual Words of the Noneohak

조선의 경학은 주자학파의 新注를 중심으로 발전하였다. 그러나 때로 경전의 本旨 추구, 古注 중심, 신주와 고주의 겸채 등 이른바 ‘古’의 지향을 지니기도 하였다. 이러한 양상은 특히 논어학의 중요 개념인 ‘學’, ‘仁’, ‘敬’ 등에 관한 해석에 잘 구현되어 있다. 한편 그 해석의 과정에서 구체성과 실천성을 강조하였는데, 이는 주자의 신주에 내재된 추상성과 내면지향성에 대비되는 면모를 지닌다. 조선 경학자들의 ‘고’의 지향은 주자의 신주와 경전의 본래적 의미에 대한 괴리를 인지하고, 이 양자를 조화시키려는 의식에서 형성되었다. 그러다가 점차 주자의 신주를 비판하고, 현실의 실천지향 더 나아가 경세를 강조하는 방향으로 경전을 읽게 되었다. 비록 소수이기는 하지만 일부 주자학파와 실학파의 경전해석에 나타나는 이러한 현상은 조선경학에 새로운 흐름을 형성하였다. 그런데 이러한 경전 해석은 조선지식인이 지녔던 경세의식의 경학적 표출이라고 볼 수 있다. 이는 지식인의 현실적 책무를 강조하는데서 비롯되었다고 할 것이다.

The Kyunghak in the Joseon Dynasty was developed through focusing on new annotations of the School of Zhu-xi Studies. Sometimes, however, such development was also evolved around the orientation towards Go(古), such as a pursuit of the original meaning of Confucian texts, a focus of old annotations, and a combined use of new annotations and old annotations. This aspect is well appeared in interpretations of important concepts of ‘Noneohak’, such as ‘Hak(learning, 學)’, ‘In(benevolence, 仁)’, and ‘Gyeong (reverence, 敬)’. On the other hand, in the course of interpretations, concreteness and practicality were emphasized. And it was contrasted with abstractness and inner oriented characteristics of Zhu-Xi s new annotations. The orientation towards Go(古) by the scholars of Kyunghak in the early Joseon period was formed in attempting to harmonize between the original meaning of the Confucian texts and Zhu-Xi s new annotations after recognizing the disjunction between them. Then, they gradually criticized Zhu-Xi s new annotations and began to read the confucian texts with focusing on a practicality and further emphasizing a statecraft. This phenomenon, though taking a small proportion of the trend, appeared in the interpretations about Confucian texts of some of the School of Zhu-Xi studies and the school of Korean practical philosophy, created a new trend in the Kyunghak in the Joseon Dynasty. Such interpretations about Confucian texts can be seen as an academic expression of an awareness on a statecraft cherished by intellectuals in the Joseon Dynasty. And it was originated from the emphasis on a realistic responsibilities of intellectuals, which was much stronger in Korea than in China and Japan.
