Assessment of economic damages due to flood not only provide guidelines at various stages of the flood mitigation planning for structural and non-structural measures, but also contributes in development of policies as well as decision making process thus enhancing the resilience of the society. Establishment and utilization of depth-damage relationship is extensively practiced approach to reckon the probable flood loss of properties. In the present study, depth-damage functions were developed using two different method of flood damage assessment for detached residential buildings from Gunsan City, Korea. As the direct method, field observed inundation depth and damage amount data were utilized by means of statistical analysis to establish depth damage curves. On the other hand, an indirect method but commonly used in Korea, Multi-dimensional Flood Damage Analysis (MD-FDA) approach was adapted to estimate expected flood loss so the depth-damage functions with statistical technique. A comparison was made between two functions obtained from direct and indirect method. The result of such comparison revealed that functions of the MD-FDA is overestimating than functions of direct method ranging from 660% to 700% for inundation depth of 0.25m to 2m respectively.
